One game that is flying under the radar nationally heading into Week 2 will take place at Valley Children's Stadium in Fresno, California, on Saturday night. The Oregon State Beavers (1-0) and Fresno State Bulldogs (1-0) will battle it out in a game that is about as close to a pick 'em as you'll find on this week's college football slate. Fresno State is hovering around a one-point favorite against the visiting Beavers, which seems about right as both teams are evenly matched.

Oregon State flew out of the gates in Week 1 with a decisive 34-17 win over the visiting Boise State Broncos. The Beavers rushed out to a 24-0 lead at halftime and cruised the rest of the way for a comfortable double-digit win in front of a sold-out crowd at Reser Stadium in Corvallis. Chance Nolan completed 14 of 23 passes for 251 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. The running game ground out 178 yards on 37 carries for an average of 4.8 yards per carry, which is in line with what Oregon State needs to be successful running the ball in 2022. Luke Musgrave got off to a great start as the team's primary pass-catching target, with six receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown. The defense kept the "turnover chainsaw" busy on Saturday night by forcing five turnovers as Jaydon Grant, Alex Austin, and Rejzohn Wright ignited things with an interception apiece.

Fresno State opened its 2022 season with a solid 35-7 win over FCS Cal Poly on Thursday night to kick off the latest edition of the Jeff Tedford era for the Bulldogs. Tedford returned to the sidelines after Kalen DeBoer left to take the head coaching job at Washington after the end of the 2021 regular season. Jake Haener completed 36 of 42 passes for 377 yards and two touchdowns and was very sharp operating the offense like usual. Jordan Mims rushed 15 times for 73 yards and two touchdowns. Nikko Remigio caught nine passes for 100 yards and a touchdown to lead the receiving corps that had plenty of touches against the Mustangs. Evan Williams led the Bulldogs' defense with eight tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, as they never allowed Cal Poly to get into any type of consistent rhythm during the game.

First and foremost, the offense must clean up the turnovers because they can't afford to turn the football over three times again this week. Starting the game with a long-sustained drive focused on running the ball to set up the pass is going to be very important for the offense. It will keep the crowd out of the game and allow the big physical offensive line to impose their will on the Fresno State defensive front. The other benefit of establishing the run first for the Beavers is that it takes some pressure off Nolan to win the game by himself by throwing the football.

For the Bulldogs' defense, it's about winning at the line of scrimmage and setting a physical tone. However, it will be easier said than done, as the Oregon State offensive line did not allow a sack last week against Boise State. They also can't take the bait on play-action, since the Beavers are very good at making defenses pay with explosive passes. If Fresno State can get big performances from Williams, Malachi Langley, and Morice Norris, who combined for 4.5 tackles for a loss last week, they will be in a great position to win.

Haener must take what the Oregon State defense gives him and not force anything that isn't there in the passing game. Mims should expect to see another 15-20 carries, if not more, and will need to move the chains to keep the Beavers on their heels defensively. Remigio and Jalen Cropper are going to be tested by a couple of NFL-caliber players in Wright and Grant. The one-on-one battles between Remigio and Cropper against Wright and Grant will be fun to watch, and Fresno State needs to win most of them.

Oregon State's defense needs to dominate the turnover battle to steal possessions for their offense. Red zone defense is another key, as Fresno State will move the football on them. They must force field goal opportunities inside the 20-yard line. Creating negative plays would be a huge plus this week for the defense because it would crank up the pressure on Fresno State to make big plays in long-yardage situations. Kyrei Fisher-Morris, Omar Speights, and John McCartan must come up with at least five tackles for a loss between them, if not more, to give the Beavers a chance to win.

The big thing for Oregon State is taking its high-level play at home out on the road, as that is the next key step in the growth of the program under Jonathan Smith. In 2021, the wins at home over Utah and Washington were overshadowed by losses to Cal and Colorado on the road — those were two games that the Beavers should have won. They should play well, but winning in Fresno is not easy; the Bulldogs are undefeated in six home games against Oregon State. Fresno State has the better quarterback in this matchup, as Haener has too much experience and talent and won't give the ball away five times. That is why the Bulldogs, in the end, will improve to 2-0 by winning a close, high-scoring game in which both teams will score at least 30 points.
