A warning has been issued to drivers who choose to refuel at the UK's leading supermarket and petrol chains, suggesting that prices may be being cut too slowly following a 9p decrease in prices since July. The RAC has criticised four chain supermarkets - Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, and Sainsbury's - for not reducing their prices more quickly.

A spokesperson said, that independent retailers have been 'leading the charge' on reducing prices, leading to the larger supermarkets being forced to act.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: "July has been an unnecessarily tough month for drivers due to the big four supermarkets' unwillingness to cut their prices to a more a reasonable level, reflecting the consistent and significant reductions in the wholesale cost of petrol and diesel.

"What ought to have happened is that the biggest retailers cut their prices more significantly on a daily basis, given the wholesale price of petrol has fallen steadily over the last eight weeks."
